Ginny O'Brien

Ginny O'Brien is an executive coach, specializing in leadership development with a special emphasis on women’s leadership. In 1998, she founded The Columbia Consultancy, a leadership-development coaching firm. In 2007, she was named one of Boston’s Top 10 Coaches by Women’s Business Journal. Ginny’s “Integrated Leadership” coaching model encompasses five core areas of development: authenticity, vision and strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, assertive communication, and the ability to build and nurture relationships. Using her knowledge of neuroscience, she coaches her clients on how to literally use their brains to lead and using her understanding of gender she helps leaders value and integrate the masculine and feminine sides of themselves. Ginny has coached hundreds of leaders from a range of corporations and Fortune 500 companies in the following industries: aviation, consulting, financial services, healthcare, high tech, insurance, information technology, law, manufacturing, market intelligence, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and publishing. Since it was founded in 2001, she has coached over two dozen managers and directors at a joint venture company in the financial industry, and for the last four years, she has coached approximately three dozen senior executives in the US and Europe in several different coaching programs at one of the world’s largest consulting firms.

In addition to coaching, Ginny is a skilled facilitator and workshop leader, who has led leadership development workshops for over 100 organizations, including major corporations such as Chubb, EMC, Kodak, McKinsey & Company, SalomonSmithBarney, Texas Instruments, Verizon, Viacom, and Xerox.

Ginny is the author of three books: Coaching Yourself to Leadership: Five Key Strategies for Becoming an Integrated Leader, (HRD Press, 2006); Success on Our Own Terms: Tales of Extraordinary, Ordinary Business Women (John Wiley, 1998); and, The Fast Forward MBA in Business (John Wiley, 1996). In addition, she was a contributing author to Winning in the New Europe: Taking Advantage of the Single Market (Prentice Hall, 1992). Her articles have been published in numerous magazines, and she has been featured in major newspapers and magazines, including O, The Oprah Magazine.

Ginny has held management positions in communications and public relations, and has worked for small businesses, nonprofit organizations and major corporations. Ginny holds a summa cum laude BA in psychology and an MS from Boston University's College of Communication. She is a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) with the International Coach Federation (ICF), a member of the International Consortium for Coaching in Organizations (ICCO), a Certified Professional Behavioral Analyst (CPBA), and an adjunct coach with the Center for Creative Leadership. Ginny is qualified to use the following assessment instruments: BarOn EQ, Benchmarks, CDP 360, CPI 260, DISC, Firo B, MBTI, and Workplace Big Five. She has also received training in Dialogue, Negotiation, Integrating Neurobiology and Relational-Cultural Theory, Organizational Development, and Spiritual Psychology.
